Our Story

No matter where or when, every Northlander can engage in basketball in their own backyard, without barriers.

Northland Basketball was formed in 2017, bringing together Te Tai Tokerau Basketball and the Northland Suns Development Trust to create one regional association for basketball across Te Tai Tokerau.

Since then, basketball in Northland has continued to grow through the commitment of volunteers, coaches, referees, administrators, schools, clubs, whānau, and communities who believe in the game and what it can offer young people.

Our region is large and diverse, covering communities from Te Hana in the south to Cape Reinga in the north. Basketball is now being played and developed across areas including Dargaville, Mangawhai, Kaiwaka, Whangārei, Kaikohe, Waipapa, Taipa, and Kaitāia.

Northland Basketball supports the growth of the game through competitions, development programmes, representative pathways, coach and referee development, and community partnerships. Since 2017, our teams have represented Northland at national age-group championships, helping build pride, opportunity, and connection across the region.

Our vision is simple:

No matter where or when, every Northlander can engage in basketball in their own backyard, without barriers.

We know this is ambitious, but it is also what drives us. Our role is to provide leadership, support, and direction so basketball can continue to grow in a way that works for Northland - locally, regionally, and sustainably.

At the heart of our story is a belief that basketball can do more than create athletes. It can build confidence, connection, belonging, and opportunity for people and communities across Northland.
