Representative Pathways

There are many pathways if a player wants to pursue a professional pathway in basketball, both here at home in New Zealand (NZ Breakers, or NBL teams) or abroad in USA, Australia, Phillipines, Turkey, Israel, China and many other countries.

The normal pathway in New Zealand is playing for your high school, playing representative basketball, and then making it into the national teams or national junior team camps. By playing representative basketball, players become eligible to be nominated and selected for Basketball New Zealand programmes and teams.

There are many opportunities to experience basketball at varying levels overseas with various groups, especially targeting players between 9 – 16 years old, which players may be presented with, but players should, in our mind, prioritise playing for their school, representing Northland Basketball by playing representative basketball, and any opportunities to play at a national or international level that arise from their participation in representative basketball.

Our rep teams bring together players from across Northland to train, develop and compete against other regions throughout New Zealand. While competition is an important part of the programme, our focus extends beyond winning games. We aim to create environments where athletes can challenge themselves, build confidence, develop leadership skills and create lifelong connections through basketball.

Representative basketball is but one part of a player's development journey. Northland Basketball is committed to supporting opportunities at community, association and representative levels, ensuring players of all abilities have pathways to grow within the game.

Player Pathways

There are many ways for players to engage with basketball in Northland. Representative basketball is designed to build upon the experiences athletes gain through their local clubs, schools and association programmes.

Community Basketball

Players begin their basketball journey through local clubs, school competitions, association leagues and development programmes offered throughout Northland.

Tribal Wars

Tribal Wars is Northland Basketball's regional development tournament, bringing together players from across the region to compete alongside and against athletes from different communities.

For many players, Tribal Wars provides their first experience of a representative-style environment and serves as an important step in the Northland Basketball pathway.

Northland Representative Trials

Following Tribal Wars and other identification opportunities, eligible players may register for Northland representative trials.

Trial processes are designed to identify athletes who demonstrate the skills, attitude, effort and commitment required for representative basketball.

Northland Representative Teams

Northland Basketball currently offers representative opportunities in the following age groups:

  • Under 14 (boys only - girl's programme currently under development)
  • Under 16
  • Under 18
  • Under 20

Programmes may vary from year to year depending on participation numbers, competition opportunities and available coaching staff.

Beyond Northland

  • Regional Development Programmes
